Interview with the heroine from Burden of Proof by DiAnn Mills:
Special Agent April Ramos, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I’m not sure I’m very interesting, but I am a hostage negotiator for the FBI. I find human behavior intriguing, and I also care about those caught up in crisis. When I’m not working as a negotiator, my division is public corruption.
What do you do for fun?
I cook, and I especially enjoy preparing the Pilipino dishes that my mother taught me. I also grow herbs in my backyard. Love green growing plants. Restoring antiques is a hobby, and I collect old picture frames.
What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Paperwork and cleaning toilets. As far as I’m concerned, those are the worst jobs imaginable.
What are you afraid of most in life?
Making a mistake with tragic results. I’m a rules-girl, and following the book is important. Deviation means a potential disaster.
What do you want out of life?
Peace and the satisfaction of a job well done. My home is a sanctuary, and I work hard to ensure it is filled with bits of me. One day, I’d like a family.
What is the most important thing to you?
My career, and on the flip side of it, I wish my parents supported my position at the FBI. While I say I’m a “big girl” and I don’t need my parents’ approval, I’d really like to have it.
Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
I read psychology, behavior, counseling, and true-crime. Oh, and cookbooks.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My supervisor says I care too much, but that’s who I am. The biggest problem is I’m a perfectionist, and I want people to be mentally healthy and happy. I take it very personal when tragedies occur.
Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I don’t have a pet, but if I did, the animal would be a dolphin. I know, weird. But think of the fun we’d have in the water.
If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I keep thinking about this, and honestly, I’m content with today and where I fit. Technology is so much a part of my life that I wouldn’t want to give it up.
