I’m honored to have Sarah Sundin on my blog as part of the Spring 2016 Christian Scavenger Hunt. She writes wonderful stories with World War II as the backdrop. Blurb for Anchor in the Storm: For plucky Lillian Avery, America’s entry into World War II means a chance to prove herself as a pharmacist in Boston. She loves the wartime challenges of her new job but spurns the attention of society boy Ens. Archer Vandenberg. As Arch’s destroyer battles U-boats along the East Coast, Lillian uncovers a black market drug ring. Arch and Lillian work together on the investigation, but can he ever earn her trust and affection?
Bio of Sarah Sundin:
Sarah Sundin is the author of eight historical novels, including Anchor in the Storm (May 2016). Her novel Through Waters Deep was named to Booklist’s “101 Best Romance Novels of the Last 10 Years,” and her novella “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” in Where Treetops Glisten was a finalist for the 2015 Carol Award.
When Life Imitates Art
By Sarah Sundin
Years ago when I wrote my proposal for Anchor in the Storm, I never dreamed the romantic plot would be echoed in the Sundin household.
In my novel, the plucky heroine is less than impressed with her older brother’s big friend, dismissing him as a snooty society boy. He steadily pursues her, but she rejects him. Only when they work together on an investigation does she see his fine qualities—and she falls in love.
Many years ago, a boy named Zander fell for our daughter, Anna. He was in fourth grade. She wanted nothing to do with him…after all she was in third grade and she had brothers and knew how disgusting boys were. By middle school, Zander and our oldest son, Stephen, had become close friends. All through high school, Zander steadily pursued Anna, but she rejected him, dismissing him as a nerd like Stephen—for the record, I’m a proud nerd myself.
When Anna started college, she was slightly annoyed when she ended up in the same humanities class as Zander. Although she enjoyed his friendship—he’s one of the few people in the world who can keep up with her wit—she continued to keep him at bay romantically.
For the final project, Anna and Zander chose to act out a rather lengthy scene from Richard III, which they put in a World War II setting—a “life imitating art” moment, since my books are set in WWII. They spent dozens of hours working together, arguing together, laughing together. All that time together showed her his finest qualities. I told Stephen that if Anna was ever going to fall for Zander, it would be then. And if she didn’t fall for him then, she never would.
Well, she fell, and she fell hard. Soon she was sighing over his gorgeous eyes.
On July 18, 2015, our daughter married her oldest brother’s best friend.
Life imitated art, and I couldn’t be happier.
