Interview with the heroine from Murder by Suspicion by Veronica Heley

1. What is the most interesting thing about Ellie Quicke?

Ellie Quicke is a 60-ish housewife with a successful second marriage, who spends her time looking after other people and fending off her greedy daughter, Diana. Ellie has no opinion of her own talents but has a knack of getting people to tell her things, which enables her, now and then, to sort out problems – including murder – in the neighbourhood.

2. What does she do for fun?

She watches reruns of Judge Judy. She likes to break off work for coffee with a friend, and enjoys a good gossip which she says is essential for prayer purposes.

3. What does she put off doing because she dreads it?

She puts off cleaning the oven.

4. What is she afraid of most in life?

She is most afraid of losing her independence.

5. What does she want out of life?

Above all, Ellie wants to be of use.

6. What is the most important thing to her?

She doesn’t think she’s a great prayer warrior, but she does try to listen to what God is telling her to do, which often seems to be to help other people when they’re in trouble. Sometimes all she can do is to listen – but she does realise that that is important.

7. Does she read books? If so, what is her favorite type of book?

She borrows books from the library but she doesn’t like stories which make her feel depressed. She’s gone back to re-reading Elizabeth Goudge’s books recently, which she finds life-affirming.

8. If Ellie could change one thing about herself, what would it be?

She’d have a svelte figure and be at least four inches taller.

9. Do she have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

A ginger tom cat called Midge decided to take up residence in her house. He tolerates her and she tries not to spoil him. He can be a great companion but strictly on his own terms.

10. If Ellie could travel back in time, where would she go and why?

She’d like to know what her father and grandfathers did during the two World Wars. They never spoke of it, and as a child she didn’t know enough about it to ask them. Now they’re gone and she wishes she knew more about them, But she isn’t curious enough to do any research – there’s too much going on in her life to spend time looking back.
