Interview with the heroine from Holly Garden, PI, Red Is For Rookie by Anne Greene

1. Holly Garden, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I live with my mother, my grand-mother, and younger twin sisters. We all have flower names, but I shortened my Hollyhock to Holly. My Dad owned Garden Investigations, but I let him down while on a stake-out, and he was murdered. My goal now is to be a top-notch detective like Dad and clear his muddied name as a dirty PI. Along the way I have to put our dying agency back in the black.

2. What do you do for fun?

I’m finding being detective the greatest fun I’ve ever had. I meet the most interesting people and have great adventures, although sometimes I find my life in danger.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I dreaded visiting the hospital to talk with the man who took a bullet for me. He lived, but his life was touch and go. Actually the visit turned out to be life changing.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

So many people depend on me, and I don’t want to let anyone down. And now, after solving my first case and discovering a few leads in my father’s, I’m afraid I may never find the dirty cops who painted my Dad as a dirty PI and then murdered him.

5. What do you want out of life?

My career’s going great guns, so that fulfills one dream. But I’m confused. Is it possible to love two men at the same time? Matt, my life-long friend and Stryker, my new co-worker both love me. Their competition proves awkward because we all work for my uncle who now owns Garden Investigations. Both men are dear to me. How can a woman choose between two such hot, outstanding men?

6. What is the most important thing to you?

I teach third grade Sunday School class and it’s important to me to be an example of Christ’s love to the boys and girls. It’s also important to me to let my Christian light shine in the dark underbelly of society where I work as a detective. So loving Christ, following Him, and obeying Him are the most important things to me.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Believe it or not, but as a detective, I love a good detective story.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’m probably too impulsive. I run head-long into danger when someone is in trouble. But these days I’ve learned to call for back-up, and my two favorite men are right there to make sure I don’t get murdered.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I’d have to say I have no animal pet. I’m too busy taking care of my always- getting-into-trouble grandma, who turns out to be a great help on my cases. But she rushes in where Angels fear to tread. And the dear woman always says exactly what’s on her mind, landing me in many awkward moments.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d go back into my last case and witness to the misguided young man who ended up dead. God nudged me, but I thought it better that a man tell the young man of Jesus’ love for him. This taught me a lesson to explain to everyone I meet during a case, that Jesus loves them, that He died for them, and that he forgives the sin of those who ask Him. When they invite Jesus into their lives, He gives them the precious gift of eternal life. Not telling that young man who was murdered haunts me.
