Interview with the heroine from The Rescued by Marta Perry

1.  Mattie Lapp, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m certain sure I’m just an ordinary Amish woman, trying to do what’s best for my family. Since my husband died, it’s been a struggle to go on without him, running the farm, raising our children—I never imagined that one day I’d be doing it alone. If it weren’t for the help of family, especially my husband’s younger cousin, Adam, I don’t know how I’d manage. But with God’s grace, we go on.

2.  What do you do for fun?

The most fun is just doing things with my children and the rest of the family. Whether it’s picking apples or running the family farm stand or going to a quilting frolic, the most fun is being with people I love.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Somehow I must make decisions about the future, but I don’t know how. But I must. I’m a widow now, and the responsibility rests on me. No matter how much my friends and family love me, I can’t let them decide for me.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

I’m afraid of all the changes that are coming to our quiet area of Lancaster County since the end of the war. It seems that the 1950s are a time of progress for America, but progress isn’t a goal for the Amish. Like the changes the county wants to make to our schools. They’re saying I must send my fourteen-year-old daughter to a distant school instead of letting her pursue our own ways. In fact, if I don’t obey, the law says I will be arrested. Who will care for my children if I’m in jail? But how can I expose my daughter to a life that is contrary to our Amish beliefs?

5.  What do you want out of life?

I want to live peacefully, to serve God, and to raise my children to love and respect our ways.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

Faith and family are the most important things in life, and to me, they are tied together. We live by faith, and we share our faith with the next generation through the humble way we live. Isn’t there room for that in a great country?

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I love to read, especially in the winter when the farm chores take less time. I especially love sharing books with my children. We are reading our way through all of the Little House books, and I enjoy them as much as the children do!

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would like to be a little braver. If I have to face persecution, I fear I might crumble, but I pray that God will give me strength.

9.  Do you have a pet?

If so, what is it and why that pet? Living on a farm, we have animals all around us, but they are working animals, just as we are working people.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Sometimes I long to go back to the days when my husband and I fell in love. But how would I bear it, knowing I would lose him. And how can I respond to dear Adam, who says he loves me, when my heart still belongs to my husband?
