Interview with the hero from Permanent Vacancy by Katy Lee

1. Colm McCrae, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m an Irishman here in the States because someone thought I looked good in front of a camera. One day I’m living on Dublin’s streets, and the next I’m a television host for a home improvement reality show. That means I’m in front of the camera all day long, and the hammer on my belt is really only for show.

2. What do you do for fun?

Crack jokes, but I also get paid for doing that, so does that count?

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Calling home to my mother in Ireland. I hate that she hasn’t kicked her abusive husband to the curb. I don’t understand why.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

That I might be just as bad as the man my mother married.

5. What do you want out of life?

To be like my da. He was a good man and a good carpenter. He taught me so much before he died, but not enough to really be like him. There was so much more I needed to know.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Protecting the underdog. Standing up for those who can’t stand up or speak up for themselves.

7. Do read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Carpentry for the carpenter wannabes like meself.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My temper. It scares me.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I’ve never had a pet, unless you count the rats and stray cats in some of the alleys I grew up with. Someday I would love a dog. Maybe an Irish setter.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Ah, I can picture it now. A small cottage on grass so green it blinds ya. It was my da’s workshop, and he was always whistling some Irish tune. Some he sang the words to, but some were not fit for my young ears. I would like to go back and listen some more. To the songs and to all he had to teach me.
