Interview with the hero from Betting on Hope by Debra Clopton:
1. Tru Monahan, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I’m a regular guy, and I don’t know what’s interesting about me-I know what I’m interested in that’d be the clutzy advice columnist that has suddenly seemed to tak over my life. I’m not sure where this is going but it’s going to be interesting finding out.
2. What do you do for fun?
For fun-I like to relax and ride my horse across the ranch that my Pops built one acre at a time. It’s a beautiful ranch in the center of Texas and it’s covered in the most beautiful old oak trees with massive branches and in the spring the bluebonnets cover the ground like blue carpet. It feels like heaven on earth. That’s what I do for fun, and one day, I’m going to ride across it with the love of my life…if we can save the ranch from the creditors who me and my brothers are trying to pay off. Long story but it’s a fight worth fighting because we want to keep Pops’ legacy alive for generations to come.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Interviews with reporters. I’m not fond of them but have to do them because it’s required of me from my sponsors. I have to say though that when Maggie interviewed me I had the time of my life! Even if it did end in a weird bet where I’m now having to teach her to ride a quarter horse…
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
That I won’t be able to have the family I want.
5. What do you want out of life?
To be home off the road and raising my horses and my family on this ranch that I love so much. And that my Pops, who is in the first stages of Alzheimers will have enough of his memory left to realize his grandkids are enjoying the ranch he built for them.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Right now, keeping Pops dreams alive. My dreams can come later. Right now my grandfather’s matter most.
7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
When I have time I like to read a little John Grisham.
8. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I have horses. But my Pops has a Bassett hound that that sulks around and does the weirdest things. You never know what Solomon is going to do–He drives me a little nuts, but he loves Pops and Pops loves him and that is all that matters.
9. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I’d go back to the interview with Maggie and I’d sweep her into my arms before she hit the ground and landed on her…well, before she injured her pride. She sure looked cute in those red high heels but they were out to break her neck from the moment I saw her. Yup, that’s what I do. I don’t think we can change a lot about our lives but I’d like to protect Maggie. She doesn’t seem to have ever had anyone to do that for her. And I’m thinking I’d like to change that.
