Interview with the heroine from Love Gently Falling by Melody Carlson:

1. Tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Rita Jansen has a “dream job” as a hairdresser in Beverly Hills, and she loves working on celebrities, but has a feeling that something is missing in her life.

2. What do you do for fun?

Jump in the car and head over to our beach cottage (3 hours away). It’s such a departure from living in the mountains (where it can be pretty cold in the winter) and the beach scenery is a welcome break. Plus it helps regenerate the creative juices.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Cleaning my closet. Although we downsized last summer (and I got rid of a lot) I still have a closet that’s big enough to hold “too many” clothes. I really need to thin the herd and give a bunch more away. I really believe less is more, but for some reason I drag I my heels. I think it’s genetic. You should see my mom and my sister’s closets.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

I can’t think of any terrible fears, but I really, really dislike being a passenger in a car that’s being driven on ice. Probably because I remember spinning out a few times as a young driver. And I basically believe that no one should attempt to drive on ice!

5. What do you want out of life?

As far as my own personal life goes, I’m pretty content. But I want to see my two grown sons happily living their best lives.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

My relationship with God. It’s truly my lifeline. I would be lost without it.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I like a well written contemporary novel about a woman’s struggle with everyday challenges. But sometimes I venture into historical or suspense.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would become more outgoing and less of a hermit. Ironically, I used to be much more social. But I think the years of writing (a solitary job) have turned me inward. I need to force myself to get out, but when I do I almost always enjoy it.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I have a yellow Labrador retriever named Audrey. She was re-homed with us about six years ago. She’s got the sweetest disposition and loves to please us. She also loves taking walks and chasing the ball.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

If it was only for a short spell, I’d like to go to the 1850’s and travel the Oregon Trail like my ancestors did. I wrote a trilogy about it (Homeward on the Oregon Trail) which made me even more interested. But I know there’s a ‘pioneer’ in me that likes to make-do and explore. However, I know the hardships were real and I suspect I’d be begging to return to modern conveniences before long.
