Interview with the hero from Two Renegade Realms by Donita Paul:
1. Bridger, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I’m actually not the hero of Two Renegade Realms. I mean I am a hero, of course, but my constant, Cantor, is the official hero of the tale. But I’m his dragon, and therefore his constant, and therefore involved in all the adventures, and well, I have all the attributes necessary for being labeled “hero.” Unfortunately, Cantor doesn’t always see my finer points, because in my enthusiasm, I can be a bit clumsy. For that matter, Cantor doesn’t always acknowledge that I’m his constant. What is a constant? A realm walker is paired for life with a mor dragon. They are companions and comrades and do amazing feats of valor together.
2. What do you do for fun?
Mor dragons are shapeshifters. Most can only change into two other forms. That is their dragon form and two others. So, three, altogether. I am unique in that I have no limits. For fun I shift into things like a ball of yarn, a pelican, a flag, a hat, or . . . well, you get the idea. The challenge is to change back in a timely manner. I must say unwinding the yarn and reforming as a dragon took some time.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Going to the dentist. I have 200 teeth on the bottom and 180 on the top. It takes forever to get all those crevices and crannies cleaned. The flossing is murder. But I’ve never had a cavity and try to convince myself the hygiene check-ups are not needed.
I go. There is nothing worse than a toothache, so I go.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Being alone. Don’t tell the bad guys, but if they were to capture me and put me in solitary confinement, I’d be a basket case by the end of a week. I could probably stave off insanity by singing for a couple of days, but that wouldn’t last. Not being able to interact with others would be worse than starving.
5. What do you want out of life?
Well, this one is easy to answer. I never wanted anything other than to be a constant and travel with my realm walker. You’ve heard of the Knights of the Round Table, haven’t you? That’s our kind of gig. Rescuing damsels in distress, capturing wicked evildoers, righting wrongs, protecting the weak, helping wherever needed, all that noble stuff is in our job description.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Another easy one. Cantor was asked in his early years who he owed his allegiance to. Well, I’m the same. I live to follow and serve . . . wait! I better not tell you that answer. You should read the books.
7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
I am an avid reader. I like histories, love stories, mysteries, and animal tales.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Change something? Really? As in make myself better? Nothing comes to mind. That’s not because I’m so great, but because I don’t formulate hypotheses well. Hey, that would be a good thing to change. I could be more organized and logical.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
Yes, I have a female cat named Jesha. She’s pretty and stays calm in crisis. Well, usually she’s unflappable.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
Oh, wow! That’s a fun idea. I’d go back to the glory days of the Realm Walkers, when the Guild was run by noble men and the problems we solved were less catastrophic. This saving the world every other whipstitch gets old.
Thanks for letting me answer the questions. I know the questions were actually for Cantor, but he was taking a bath, so I just grabbed a pen and wrote out the answers. I’ll send this back before he sees it. I’m his constant, and I’m often called upon to lighten his burdens, help out in any way I can. You didn’t know he used to have a phobia about writing implements, did you? He’s a strange kid at times, but I love him.
