Heroine Interview from No Safe Haven by Virginia Vaughn:
- Jessica, tell me the most interesting thing about you. I run a shelter for victims of domestic violence.
- What do you do for fun? I don’t have a lot of time for fun. My life revolves around working at the shelter, crisis intervention calls, legal proceedings, and lobbying for domestic violence issues.
- What do you put off doing because you dread it? I counsel women at my shelter to talk about their experiences, but I’ve never told anyone—not even my closest friend—that my brother died protecting me from my former boyfriend, Mitch.
- What are you afraid of most in life? I live in fear that Mitch—the man who murdered my brother—will escape from prison and come after me. I spend my life protecting others, but I worry I won’t be able to protect myself or others from him.
- What do you want out of life? My main goal in life is to protect women from violent situations and help them find hope and healing. If I can change a life, I’ll feel my work has been worth something.
- What is the most important thing to you? My work is the most important thing in my life—until I met Andrew Jennings and discovered love could be wonderful.
- Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read? I read lots of domestic violence literature, legal documents, and policy manuals.
- If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would want to live without fear…to actually feel as strong as the persona I try to emulate.
- Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? I have a dog named Marlon that belonged to my next door neighbor…until my stalker murdered her.
- If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? I would go back to the time before I met Mitch, before my brother died protecting me from him, before my life became a nightmare of terror.
