I will not enter you without an email address (my way to contact you if you win). If you don’t want to leave an email address, another way you can enter is to email me at margaretdaley@gmail.com. The drawings end Sunday (January 27th) evening.

Home by Dark coverInterview with the heroine from Home by Dark by Marta Perry:

1. Rachel Mason, tell me the most interesting thing about you. Other people seem to think it’s interesting that I was Amish until I ran off and married Ronny Mason when I was eighteen. It was difficult, adjusting to life in the outside world and losing my relationship with my family, but I was young and in love and thought it would last forever. Now Ronny’s dead and I’m the sole support of our daughter. I’d do anything for Mandy, and the best choice for us seemed to be to move back to Deer Run, where I grew up. But no one, including my family, seems very welcoming, and I can’t help but realize that something is frightening my younger brother, Benjamin. I’m not Amish any longer, but I’m not English, either, and it seems home isn’t as safe as I thought. So what do I do now?

2.  What do you do for fun? It’s fun to introduce Mandy to the things I enjoyed when I was her age—things she missed, growing up in a series of rented apartments in the city. Here, I can take her to the community fair, we can go wading in the creek, I can even show her the animals on her grossdaadi’s farm. Maybe, if it all works out, she can have the kind of safe, happy childhood I want for her.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it? I’ve put off coming home for a long time. Knowing how much I hurt my family when I left, I didn’t want to face them again and see the pain I caused.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life? I’m afraid of something happening to Mandy. Or something happening to me, so that I can’t take care of her. It’s terrifying to think how alone in the world we’ve been, with no one to care what happens to us.

5.  What do you want out of life? I want a safe, secure life with my child. That’s why I came back to Deer Run—to build a haven for us.

6.  What is the most important thing to you? Family is most important to me. It’s a shame I didn’t realize that before I alienated the people who loved me most. I long to mend fences with them for Mandy’s sake, if not my own.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read? I haven’t had much time to read anything other than books about how to run a bed and breakfast. Since my only asset is the rambling old house my mother-in-law left me, I’m opening it as a b and b.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Sometimes I wish I were the kind of person who could confront others, but I never have been, and I don’t suppose that will change now.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? Colin McDonald, a friend of my late husband, gave us a puppy because Mandy wanted it so. I was initially reluctant to take on the additional responsibility, but the little guy has worked his way into my heart.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? I might go back to the moment I decided to run away with Ronny and change things. But if I did that, Mandy might not exist, and I could never wish for life without her.

  1. Oh, I really want to read this and find out what decisions are made and se if her family forgives her. I’d hate to know that I had to not ever speak to my child again, because they moved away. Please put my name in to try to win this book.

  4. Rachel Mason, i know you hated to go home because you had been living in the other world or English, but i know you were afraid not to go home after her husband died being the only parent for her daughter Mandy, if something would happy to her who who would take care of Mandy. God bless you.
