Interview with the heroine from the Prophet by R.J. Larson:
1. Ela of Parne, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
My Creator, the Infinite, has asked me to become His prophet, and I accepted the task though I know I’ll die young. All of Parne’s prophets have died young. The realization frightens me, but I couldn’t bear the thought of living to old age while never hearing His voice.
2. What do you do for fun?
Whenever I have the chance, I play with my little sister, Tzana. I love to hear her laugh! I also enjoy cooking. More than anything, however, I love to question the Infinite and listen to Him.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
As Parne’s prophet, above all, I’m expected to obey my Creator—and I want to obey Him. Putting off tasks He has assigned…no-no. Not proper-prophet behavior!
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Leaving my family and friends when I die. And…perhaps my manner of death. I fear it’ll be painful. I wish I could see my own future as easily as I see the future for others.
5. What do you want out of life?
More than anything? To follow the Infinite’s will. I knew when I agreed to become Parne’s prophet that following Him is my goal in this mortal life. However, if I weren’t the Infinite’s prophet, I must admit I would pray to meet an interesting, Infinite-fearing man who loves me. I’d marry him and have a house full children. It’s a hopeless dream.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
I pray that, by my obedience, other souls can be restored to their Creator—He loves us so completely! Nothing else in life—in all our lives—is as important as seeking Him.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
Oh, yes! I love to read the Holy Books and try to imagine what life was like for my predecessors, Parne’s previous prophets. Were they as afraid as I am? Did they also feel like failures when people ignored their warnings? Were they taken more seriously by others because they were men? I’m Parne’s first female prophet, and it infuriates me no end when people refuse to believe me while I’m trying to warn them and save their souls!
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Hmm. My bad temper, I suppose. It’s not prophet-like and undignified to lose my temper with others, but…I admit I do.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
Yes, but he would grumble to hear anyone comparing him to a mere house pet. A destroyer—a monster warhorse—has pledged himself to serve me. I’m convinced he sees the Infinite’s power through me. I doubt it’s correct for a prophet to own a destroyer, but I love the dear rascal. Tzana named him…um…Pet.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I would return to Parne, seventy years past, and question Parne’s last prophet, Eshtmoh. There’s so much I don’t know about being the Infinite’s prophet!
