Hero Interview from Love Finds You in Prince Edward Island by Susan Page Davis:

1. Peter Stark, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
In England, most people wouldn’t find this interesting, but I’m a servant to an earl. I suppose lots of Americans would think that was fascinating.

2. What do you do for fun?
I work around one of the earl’s farms, helping a tenant farmer.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I dread being in the same room with the Prince of Wales. They say he is a nice young man, but I know he thinks I am less than nothing because of my station, my family, and my birth.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Never having a life and a family of my own. It seems I was born to serve others.

5. What do you want out of life?
I’d love to have my own farm and to have the freedom to marry and raise a family. I don’t foresee that happening. But since I came to British North America and I’ve seen the way the common people live here, I envy them. Class is not nearly so important here. A farmer or a fisherman can also hold public office. A poor man can work hard and earn enough to buy a piece of land. I’ve thought about that a lot since I met Molly Orland.

6. What is the most important thing to you?
Honor, I suppose. Duty. Not disgracing my family. Doing my work well. All of the things that make up good character.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
Yes, I love to read. The earl allows me to borrow books from his library. Here in Prince Edward Island, I borrowed one from the governor’s collection. It’s by Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American author, and it’s prodigiously funny.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would be a respectable gentleman. Not rich. I don’t ask for that. Just a well-respected name, for my mother’s sake.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
No, I’ve never had a pet, but the earl lets me ride one of his horses when I’m checking things on his lands. I love riding.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I’d go back to the day Molly’s grandfather attacked mine and try to stop it.
