Interview with the heroine from The Rhythm of Secrets by Patti Lacy:
1.Sheila Franklin, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
Oh, dear, Margaret. Are you alone?
Okay. Good. You really must not tell anyone, but I’ve gone by two other names. Sigh. Back in the old days, I pulled dimes from the ears of French Quarter mimes. Fascinating stuff. Really novel-worthy. Sigh. That was before…Mimi sent me away.
2. What do you do for fun?
Daydream with Ebony and Ivory. Margaret, I don’t know what I would’ve done these past decades without my piano.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
You are really getting personal now, and I barely know you! But Patti said you could keep a secret—in fact, she said you could keep dozens of them.
Margaret, I’ve put off telling Edward—my pastor husband—the truth about my past. One phone call—just yesterday, in fact—has changed everything.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Hurting my husband Edward’s church. Hurting my husband Edward’s career. Hurting. My. Husband. Edward.
5. What do you want out of life?
Margaret, I want to be free of these sordid secrets.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
My son. My husband. Don’t you see, it’s a horrible dilemma! If I save one, I destroy the other. Oh, Margaret, what will I do?
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
An old Bible given to me by Miz W, a landlady sent from God above.
I love the children’s books in the church library…love more letting the little ones sit in my lap and turn the pages. You see, I lost my little one…but now he’s found!
I won’t lose him again, do you hear me? I WON’T!
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Margaret, I can’t tell you. It happened in St. Paul, Minnesota, back in 1949. Oh, if I could rewind the tape of history, replay that day…
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I would LOVE to have a cat, but Edward’s allergies prohibit such a thing.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
Oh, Margaret, for just ONE HOUR in that 1940s French Quarter, singing along with my Maman, my Papa…
Margaret, I really have to go. You see, I’ve reserved a table at Etienne’s. The place in Chicago to see and be seen. They would never think to look for me, a pastor’s wife, there…
