Interview with the hero from Wildflower Bride by Mary Connealy:
1. Wade Sawyer, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I grew up with a father who was ashamed of me. When I grew up and could get away it was like I carried his voice in my head saying he was ashamed to have me for his son. But I made my peace with God and I cling now to God’s word. Sometimes I need to hang on to God to get through life one minute at a time. But I’m learning to believe I’m not so bad.
2. What do you do for fun? I’ve made friends with Red Dawson and his wife. I live with them when I’m between other jobs. Their little girl can make me smile when nothing else can.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it? Talking to my father. In fact, I would have told you I was going to do more than put it off. I was going to stay away from him for the rest of my life. But now Pa’s hurt and I’ve got to go home. As part of honoring my father, God commands that I go. But oh, I’m dreading it. When a pretty woman came into my life, a woman who’d lost her home, I talked her into coming home with me. With Abby in the house, I might be able to stand it.
4. What are you afraid of most in life? My father. No contest. Except I’ve got this girlfriend. Well, I say she’s my girlfriend. She’s not admitting that. But she is. I mentioned her because she’s a little scary. She’s got this knife that she pulls every time she gets the least bit upset. In fact I don’t think she’s met a man yet she hasn’t pull a knife on. And that includes me. But she hasn’t cut me yet, so I think she’s coming around.
5. What do you want out of life? I want to rescue a woman. I know it’s a little crazy but my ma died when I was really young. I remember my ma reading me fairy tales about princes rescuing fair maidens. Somehow when I see a woman in need I want to jump in there and save her. Only trouble is, the last two women I’ve tried to save, didn’t really need me hanging around. One had a good man to take care of her. The other is tougher than I’ll ever be. And that’s not counting Belle Tanner. I had an urge to rescue her one time. But I got sidetracked saving Glowing Sun, a white woman who lived with an Indian tribe. She was a hard woman to save. I had to catch up to her first and she was always running away.
6. What is the most important thing to you? To be courageous. My earthly father is ashamed of me. But I’ve learned there’s no point in trying to please him. It is my most fervent prayer that God would know I’m trying to be a good Christian man.
7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book? I own a Bible. That’s it. I don’t need more.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I’d fix myself inside. I’d be brave inside. Outwardly I think I’m doing okay living with courage but inside I’m scared to death all the time.
9. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? I’d live in the time of knights and fair maidens. Castles and war horses and lances. I’d wear shining armor, but instead now, I’ve put on the armor of God and that’s all the protection I need.

You know, for some reason, Margaret, these character interviews always seem really SERIOUS. Of course any character's inner thoughts, true answers, contain their fears and conflicts. But honestly, girl, it's a romantic comedy.
I got close with my answer about Glowing Sun pulling her knife, but she hasn't cut me yet so I think she's coming around.
But mostly, poor dead serious Wade.
I'm not making it up. It's a comedy.
