Favorite story lines

On one of my loops today someone was asking if the marriage of convenience story line was still popular. I love reading them in historicals, but it’s hard for me to believe it in a contemporary novel. That doesn’t mean I haven’t seen it done well in a contemporary book, but the writer has to convince me it is a believable situation.

This got me to thinking what was my favorite story line. I have several, but probably my favorite is the redeeming of a bad boy. I love it when the heroine is the reason he gives up his old ways and embraces love. She tames the untameable. Of course, I love that kind of story being told against the backdrop of an adventure or suspense.

There are other classic themes: the reunion story, the secret baby, the Cinderella story, the beauty/beast theme. What’s your favorite theme in a book and why?

  1. I agree. The marriage of convenience takes some convincing in contemporary tales. I really don’t like the secret baby and recently realized that there are a TON of these being released every month.

I like star-crossed loves and second chance stories.

  2. I’d like to see some on how the heroine can overcome a hero’s manaical commitment-phobia and end up with a happy marriage…. 😉
