I’m excited to introduce my guest blogger, Carrie Stuart Parks, who writes mystery and suspense stories. Not only is she a writer but a forensic artist. How exciting! Her newest book is Portrait of Vengeance (A Gwen Marcey Novel):  Gwen Marcey has done a good job keeping the pain of her past boxed up. But as she investigates the case of a missing child in Lapwai, Idaho, details keep surfacing that are eerily similar to her childhood traumas. She doesn’t believe in coincidences. So what’s going on here? No one knows more about the impact of the past than the Nez Perce people of Lapwai. Gwen finds herself an unwelcome visitor to some, making her investigation even more difficult. The questions keep piling up, but answers are slow in coming—and the clock is ticking for a missing little girl. Meanwhile, Gwen’s ex-husband is threatening to take sole custody of their daughter. As Gwen’s past and present collide, she’s in a desperate race for the truth. Because only truth will ensure she still has a future.

Inspiring Locations by Carrie Stuart Parks

As in past books, I did a lot of research on Portrait of Vengeance. And, as in past books, I had some crazy experiences. The North Central Idaho towns of Orofino, Kamiah, Lapwai, Lewiston, and Ahsahka, are all real places, as is the Dworshak Dam in Ahsahka. I called the visitor’s center to get more information for my research. It didn’t go well. “Hi, my name is Carrie Stuart Parks, and I’m writing about your dam. I want to blow it up.” Silence. Needless to say, I received very little information on exploding a dam. In fact, if you notice, the name of the dam is never mentioned in my book. I made a promise to not mention it, nor the name of the poor person who took my call. Orofino is unique in that the men’s prison, the state mental hospital, and the high school are all in the same area. As in next door. The Nez Perce tribe, although very small in number, have a rich history that I wanted to explore and share. They have also had terrible events, events that should never be forgotten. North Central Idaho lies directly south of where I live, and is on the edge of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness area. You’ll find the origins of the Appaloosa horse, Hells Canyon of the Snake River (deeper than the Grand Canyon,) the rich Palouse farming region, and the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, to name just a few of the sites. I sent my dear husband, Rick, with a list of places I needed more information on in a preliminary trip. He was joined by his banjo-picking buddy, Marcus Smith, a retired career wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service and the Idaho Department of Lands. Unfortunately the movies they made for me came out like this: “Okay, Marcus, Carrie wants to know what the Kamiah Library looks like. It should be around here . . . wait! That’s that good barbecue place. . .” Sigh. I hope y’all get a chance to read my book, Portrait of Vengeance. The photograph enclosed is of the Dworshak Dam, tallest straight-axis concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere.
