Interview with the heroine from Breaking Free by Jennifer Slattery:

1.  Alice, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Interesting, huh? I don’t know if that’s quite the word I’d use to describe my life. Although it’s not exactly boring, especially lately. I’m sure you heard about my little…issue…at lunch with the girls the other day—when my credit and debit cards were denied. It’s probably all over church by now. Everyone’s got a theory.

I have a feeling I’d take their theories over the truth any day. Not that I really know what the truth is, but I’ll find out. Somehow.

2. What do you do for fun?

These questions are making me aware of something—it’s time for a change. Past time. Because honestly, most of my time is spent cleaning house, doing laundry, and cooking meals no one’s ever around to eat. But my boys play soccer, so that’s fun. I love going to their games. But lately it feels like all the other moms are staring at me. Like they know…

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Figuring out what my husband’s up to, what’s going on with our finances, and, and, and…getting a job? Seems I should’ve done that a long time ago. Then maybe I wouldn’t feel so trapped. So dependent.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

I’d have to answer this the same as I did the last question. Aren’t I the cheery one? You know what, can we start over? Hi, I’m Alice Goddard, and I love Jesus. *forces an overly large smile* Forget that. I haven’t read my Bible in, um…a really long time. But I serve on the women’s ministry leadership team. That counts for something, right?

5. What do you want out of life?

I’d really like everything to go back to how life used to be. When Trent loved me. More than the booze. When he’d take me to Cutters on the Seattle waterfront, or we’d ride the Ferris wheel, watching the lights reflecting off Elliot Bay below. If only I knew how to turn things around, how to win my husband’s heart again.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

My family. My boys. I adore my boys. And I feel like I’m failing them. Daily. I wish I knew how to keep them from the cancer their father has become. To somehow steel their hearts from the lies and continual abandonment.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

I used to. More nonfiction than anything. Seems I’m always preparing for a keynote, but I’d love to spend the day with a sweet romance, maybe something by Shannon Taylor Vannatter, so that I could remember what love’s supposed to look like. Then maybe I could figure out a way to grab hold of that.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Lose weight. Firm up. Find a magic wrinkle cream, or one that actually produces the results promised.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Nope.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d go back to the day I first met my husband. I’d look him in the eye and make him promise never to touch a drink. Because back then, just maybe he would.
