Interview with the heroine from Voice in the Wilderness by H.L. Wegley
1. KC Banning, besides being a senator’s daughter, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
The most interesting thing about me? Well, I protect defense networks deep under the West Wing and, a few days ago, I traced a security breach to a computer outside of the classified networks. I know, it’s supposedly impossible for Internet-connected devices to reach the classified defense networks. But the suspicious computer was POTUS’s laptop, the one in the president’s private study outside the Oval Office. Now I’m in serious trouble just because I did my job too well.
2. What do you do for fun?
After the laptop incident, there’s no time for fun. My time is spent running and hiding from the president, from law enforcement—he may even send the military after me to prevent me from telling my story to anyone. But, if I could, I would love to roam the mountain trails, explore the river canyons, and the caves in Central Oregon … with Brock by my side. We started doing that as kids, until my father … Enough about that. What’s your next question?
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I procrastinate when I’m supposed to do anything that requires me to use the Internet. That probably sounds strange for a girl who works for DISA in network security. But, for me, the Internet is only a source of trouble. On the job, the trouble comes from hackers. In my personal life, it’s guys harassing me. So, I’ve shrunk my Internet footprint to almost nothing.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Poisonous snakes terrify me, especially rattlesnakes. When I was 14, I walked up on a rattlesnake on Crooked River Ranch. It was coiled and ready to strike, about 18 inches from my bare leg. Brock wants to be a major league pitcher. You should have seen his throw. That rock nearly ripped the snake’s head off. But, even with its head dangling, the snake kept coiling and striking, over and over like it still wanted to kill me. President Hannan is a rattlesnake, too. He wants to kill me, and it will take a lot more than Brock’s throw to stop him.
5. What do you want out of life?
I love America, but I hate what’s happening to it. Our nation’s goodness and greatness is being stripped away. I would give my life to save this country, but what can I do to stop the moral decay and loss of liberty from a president who grabs power that doesn’t belong to him? Stopping him is supposed to be the Judiciary’s and Congress’s job, but they’re not doing it. Brock Daniels blog has over a million followers. He might be able to rally the people to save the USA, and I want to help him when he tries. If the president tries to take Brock’s blog down, I know how to keep it up.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Knowing that someone loves me in spite of me, my bad temper, my red hair, and all these freckles. My father certainly didn’t love me. I think Brock might, but that’s a subject he doesn’t want to talk about.
7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
Books? Yes, I read some. But you’re not going to recognize the titles— Securing IP Network Traffic Planes. Oh, and my favorite, Penetration Testing and Network Defense.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’ve always wanted to get rid of my freckles. When I was seven, I tried bleaching them off. That burned like fire, but the freckles were still there. Then Brock told me that a girl’s face without freckles is like the night sky without stars. I know … it’s cheesy, but it made me smile. So, maybe I’ll keep my freckles and just ask God to turn down my temper a few degrees.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
A pet? You’ve got to be kidding. Someday, I want to have a house full of kids and a dog, a real home. But when the president wants you dead, pets are the last thing on your mind.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I would go back three years to my 18th birthday, the day I became legally able to make my own decisions. No matter what my father said, I should have left DC, left all the madness inside the Beltway, and ran back to Oregon to Brock Daniels, my childhood soulmate … the only person who has ever really cared about me.
