Interview with the heroine from Rising Darkness by Nancy Mehl

1. Sophie, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

My real name is Sophie Wittenbauer, but I changed my name to Sophie Bauer. You see, I used to be someone else. Someone I didn’t like. After committing a terrible crime in my old hometown, I ran away and started over. I changed everything about me. Even my appearance. People who knew me before wouldn’t recognize me now.

2. What do you do for fun?

I don’t really have much fun. I’m too busy trying to get ahead. I work for a newspaper and am determined to become a successful crime reporter.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Facing my past. I’d rather concentrate on my new life and pretend my childhood never happened.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Running into someone who recognizes me.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want to be a success. I have to prove that I’m not the failure my father said I would be.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Being someone different than I used to be.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

I love books about romance even though I don’t believe I’ll ever find someone who could love the real me.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My past. I wish I’d been brought up in a home with parents who loved me and took care of me.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

No, not now. I’m gone from home too much. But someday, I will. I love animals. My parents wouldn’t allow me to have a pet. When I was young, I used to take care of some deer that came into our back yard from time to time. I snuck food out of the house for them, but my father found out and threatened to shoot them if I ever fed them again. It broke my heart to stop taking care of them.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Oh, my. I don’t believe I’d go back. I wish I could take back some of the wrong things I did, but I just couldn’t live with my parents again. Especially my father.
