Interview with the heroine from Christmas in Hiding by Cate Nolan

1. Callie Martin, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Until recently, I’d have said there wasn’t anything interesting about me. I was a kindergarten teacher leading a fairly calm life. That ordinary life ended when I witnessed a murder and had to go into witness protection. So, I guess the most interesting thing about me now is that I’m not who people think I am.

2. What do you do for fun?

I love to sing. I’m particularly fond of country music, but lately How Great Thou Art has been in my heart and on my lips.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I avoid confrontations. I put off breaking up with my boyfriend even though I knew he was no good for me because I dreaded the confrontation. Ironically, because I did a bad job of it, he didn’t really believe me. It’s a long story, but that’s what led to me witnessing the murder.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Not having a family. I grew up being bounced around foster homes and the idea of living the rest of my life alone terrifies me.

5. What do you want out of life?

That goes hand in hand with my greatest fear. More than anything, I want to have a family to love and cherish.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Family. I’m starting to sound like a broken record. I guess when you don’t have something so important it colors everything else in your life. Other than that, truth is what matters most. Like I told Jackson, I don’t lie. That’s part of why it broke me to know he didn’t believe in me.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Romance of course. I have a feeling I’m going to have plenty of time to read romance while I’m hiding away. Inspirational holiday romances are the best. Even though they make me miss what I don’t have, they offer the promise of God’s love which means there is always hope.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

There isn’t really much I would want to change, but I guess I’d like to be a little better at being patient and trusting in God’s plan. I try, but I could do better.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Do stuffed animals count? I can’t have any live pets while I’m on the run, but my class gave me a stuffed penguin. That’s the next best thing.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Part of me says I wouldn’t go back very far – just far enough to save Rick’s life. But I don’t think you meant that. Since I love Christmas so much, I think I would love to go back to the very first Christmas and witness the birth of our Savior. That would be amazing. I could be a shepherdess, right?
