Interview with the heroine from Anna’s Healing by Vannetta Chapman

1. Anna, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Most people would say that the most interesting thing about me is that I once was a paraplegic, and now I’m not. But I don’t agree. I think the most interesting thing about me is my family—how they have supported me with their love and cared for me through a really crazy time in my life.

2. What do you do for fun?

I’m so glad you asked! I quilt for Project Linus. That might sound like an odd thing for an Amish woman to do, but I feel that God led me to serve others in this way. I just love quilting for children.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Ack. The dishes! I’d much rather be working in the garden or sewing on a quilt.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

I guess you expect me to say that my “healing” might not last. But I’ve always known that for whatever reason … my healing is forever. No, my fears are more that I might forget what a precious gift life is and how grateful I am for each day. There was a time when I took life for granted, and I don’t want to slip back into that habit again.

5. What do you want out of life?

I have it! My family, Jacob—the love of my life, and a strong faith community. What else could anyone want?

6. What is the most important thing to you?

To help others, whether it’s someone from my family or a stranger. It’s important for me to know that I’m using the time God has given me.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Oh my, yes! Did you see the library book I was peeking at earlier? I read fiction and nonfiction. I especially like romance books, though Jacob teases me about that.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I used to fret over my weight, but not anymore. That’s one thing you learn when you can’t walk—worrying about 10 extra pounds is silly. I might change my temper. It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally I do get angry … like when the barn cat got into my fabric stash and decided to make a bed to have her kittens. I think I scared the poor thing something terrible with my yelling.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

We have a hound dog, Jake. And then there’s the barn cats, the horses, and the donkeys. Lots of animals on an Amish farm.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would go back to the months just after my accident, when I spent most of my time in a wheelchair. I’d be more kind to people and more appreciate of how they were trying to help me.
