Interview with the heroine from A Texas Christmas Wish by Jolene Navarro

1. Karly Kalakona, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

About me? I’m not sure there is anything other than my son. I guess maybe my name. I don’t hear it much. I looked it up and found out it’s a native Hawaiian name. People think I’m Hispanic. I’m actually Hawaiian or at least my mother was. It would be nice to visit Hawaii, but I don’t see that ever happening.

2. What do you do for fun?

I’m a single mother of a special needs four year old. I’m busy trying to find a safe place for us to live. He had surgery on his foot that should make things easier for him to move around, so other than coloring with my son and reading stories to him I don’t have much time for fun. Maybe one day.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Right now in order to apply for my GED I need my birth certificate. I’ve never seen it. I’m not even sure where I was born. I think my mother was from Hawaii but other than that I don’t know anything. I really dread digging too deep into the past but I will have to if I want to get a high school diploma. I don’t want my son to think of his mom as a high school drop-out.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Oh man, there are so many things I’m afraid of, but I’m working on trusting the Lord. I’m afraid people will find out about my past. The way my stepfather used me to take advantage of people that thought they were helping a sick child. I’m most afraid of ending up homeless again. Everything I do is to ensure my son has a safe and secure future. I never want him to worry about where he is going to sleep or if he will have something to eat. I want him to face life without all my fears.

5. What do you want out of life?

Well, it goes back to my fears. I want a home. I want a real family for Bryce, my son. Not a Dad, Mom and three kids kind of family, I think that’s a false fantasy. I want a community where we belong, friends we can count on, to be part of something where people take care of each other. I love that about Clear Water. When I got in trouble because of bad choices I made, people in this town, the church community stepped in and helped me in a way I’ve never been helped before and I want to return the favor. I want to make Clear Water our home and belong here in a way I have never belonged before.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

That one is easy, my son, Bryce. From the first moment I held him in my arms I knew my life had purpose and I would do anything for him.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Right now I’m reading lots of children’s picture books. Which I love since I didn’t get to read them when I was little.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I want to be braver. I want to face the world with confidence. I’m working on it each day

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

No, living out of a car is not very contusive to having a pet. Bryce wants a dog, but last week he wanted a hedgehog and the week before that he wanted a tiger. We are about to move onto a ranch for my new job and they have horses. I’m afraid that will give him more ideas.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

There is no where in my past I want to go. I want to stay focused on our future.
