Interview with the heroine from Journeys of the Heart by Winnie Griggs

1. Anisha Hayes, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I suppose that would be my heritage. I was born in India, the land of my mother. My father was an American merchant sea captain. When I was ten my mother died and my father brought me to America to live with his sister.

2. What do you do for fun?

I’ve just set off on a trip across the country to see more of this land I’ve lived in for nearly ten years now.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I can’t really think of anything. I believe in facing the disagreeable things in life and getting past them as quickly as possible.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Never finding a place where I am accepted for who I am, a place where I truly belong.

5. What do you want out of life?

To matter deeply to someone

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Being true to who I am.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I do like to read and have very eclectic tastes. I guess if I had to pick a favorite type, though, it would be poetry.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

The fact that I seem destined to go through life as a loner.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I have a large gray parrot whose name is Sundar, a Hindi name meaning beautiful. Sundar is quite intelligent and can even speak. He has been with me since before I left India and is my best friend.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would go back to the day of my mother’s death and try to save her.
