Interview with the heroine from Old West Summer Brides by Davalynn Spencer

The Columbine Bride

1. Lucy Powell, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

That would have to be my children, Cecilia and Elmore. They are truly the best thing I’ve ever done, and therefore, must be the most interesting. If I can just show them how important it is to trust God’s love, I think I will have been successful as a mother.

2. What do you do for fun?

Oh, it’s been so long. The idea of “fun” died last summer with William. But lately, well, I’ll admit that spending July 4th at the Horne Ranch with Buck Reiter and his family was indeed the most fun I’ve had in quite some time. I’d nearly forgotten what it felt like to laugh with other adults. And Buck—seeing him relaxed and not slaving away at my rundown excuse of a ranch. Well, it did me good.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I’ve dreaded many things in the past year, but I cannot put any of them off or my children and I will suffer even more.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Summer lightning storms.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want to be one half of a whole.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Most important to me is hearing the Lord’s whisper in my heart and teaching my children to do the same.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

My reading this past year has been strictly McGuffey and the emerging penmanship of my students at the Spruce City schoolhouse.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Oh, I have a stubborn streak that if I could I would rub right out of my life. Maybe.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Funny you should ask about a pet. Thanks to Buck, a happy little pup we call Rascal has taken quite a fancy to Cecilia and Elmore. And me, too, I suppose.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would go back to last summer and keep my William from riding into the mountains for that fallen tree he insisted on bringing back for firewood. But I suppose that’s a waste of wishing, for I couldn’t prevent Buck from doing the very same thing.
