Interview with the heroine from Not by Sight by Kay Lyons Stockham
1. Emma Wyatt, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
Well, I work in my father’s diner as a waitress but my passion is raising service dogs as well as kenneling dogs. That’s my goal—to have my own kennel and my own place away from my overprotective family. Oh, and I’m blind, did I mention that?
2. What do you do for fun?
I love to hang out with my Besties. The four of us have been friends for years. We’ll either meet up at the diner or at Jolie’s coffee shop after hours.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Haha! Bathing Goliath, my Great Dane. She loves bath time but it’s a game to her and she wants to be chased. Sometimes I just don’t have the energy, you know?
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Honestly? I’m afraid of having to depend on someone forever. I mean, I love my family but I’m 28, and I’m long overdue to be out on my own, but being blind… And then there’s Ian. I’ve fallen in love him, but he’s blind, too, and relationships are hard enough without these physical limitations added in. It’s just complicated. I want freedom but I also want Ian and I’m afraid I can’t have both.
5. What do you want out of life?
That’s easy. Like I said above, I want my own place where I can kennel dogs and train service dogs. I would love that!
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Faith. Without faith, I’m not sure I would’ve made it this far, you know? I lost my sight at 14 and I thought my life was over, but my faith carried me through and I’m stronger for it and a better person, too, I think.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I rarely sit still so I listen to audio books. My favorites are romance novels. A girl can dream of the perfect guy, right?
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Another easy question… My sight. I would love to see Ian and my family, my dogs. Did you know it’s estimated that 90 percent of communication is visual? I know I miss a lot by being blind.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
Haha! Do I have pets? Oh, yeah. I have two service dogs in training that live with me full-time until they’re of age to go into official training, Goli the Great Dane, plus all my kennel dogs. I also used to have Roxy, my Seeing-Eye dog, but she passed away recently from age and cancer. She was amazing though. Sometimes I think Rox could read my mind because she always knew what to do.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
If I could travel back in time… I would go back to the day of the accident and… change things so that my mom wouldn’t have died and I would still be able to see. If nothing else, I’d go back just to tell her one more time that I love her. I miss her so much.
