Interview with the heroine from Hidden Identity by Carol J. Post

1. Meagan Berry, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I taught myself to swim by watching YouTube videos. Even though I lived in California for years, I never learned how to swim until a few months ago.

2. What do you do for fun?

I paint. I especially love doing landscapes and seascapes. Whenever I’m brushing colors onto a canvas or sketching a new scene, the troubles of life seem to recede into the background.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I can’t think of any chores that I dread. I don’t even mind washing dishes! Even though I’m a creative type, I’m somewhat of a neat freak. But I have to admit, keeping a clean house is quite easy now—when I left California to come to Florida, I left everything behind.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

I have the usual fears that a lot of women (and some men) have—snakes and spiders. But I’ve also had a serious fear of water since I almost drowned at age six. Even though I now know how to swim, I’m still not comfortable in the water.

5. What do you want out of life?

Right now, I long for safety and the opportunity to pursue my art. I used to dream of becoming a well-known artist, with my work in prestigious art galleries. Now I just sell locally, because past events have made it where I have to keep a very low profile.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Family. My father was very abusive and hasn’t been in my life since I was young. But I’ve always been very close to my mom and my younger sister and would do anything to protect them.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I love to read all types of books. I have a book of poetry that was left to me by a dear friend when he was killed. Lately, I’ve avoided the suspense genre. With the events I’ve experienced recently, it feels too much like real life, and when I read, I’m looking to escape.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wish I could learn to trust people more. Or maybe I should say I wish I could know when it’s safe to trust someone. Some of my past experiences have made me leery of everyone.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I don’t have a pet. Someday I would like to have a cat, but it isn’t practical. Right now, my life is in Cedar Key, but I don’t know how long it will be until I have to move again.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would love to go back to the Renaissance Period and talk with some of the artists whose work I have studied and admire. I would visit Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Giorgione and Raphael, to name a few.

  2. Hi Margaret & Carol! I’ve tried to imagine a few times what it’d be like to have to go into hiding or start over like people in WITSEC do so stories like this fascinate me! I look forward to reading Meagan’s story and what it was like for her.
