Interview with the heroine from Undercover Bride by Margaret Brownley

Working Undercover is No Job for a Lady!

1.  Maggie Cartwright, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I guess the most interesting thing is that I’m a Pinkerton detective.  Most people don’t know that Allan Pinkerton had a whole slew of female detectives working for him undercover.  He was quick to realize that women could “worm out secrets” by means unavailable to male detectives.  Smart man.

2.  What do you do for fun?

I chase outlaws and reckon that’s about as much fun as a woman can handle.  I was once forced to jump out of a moving train.  Don’t want to do that again.  The most fun I ever had was sneaking up on Jesse James.  If he hadn’t gotten away my name would have gone down in history.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

What I dread at the moment is my upcoming wedding.  I’m working undercover as a mail order bride.  My “fiancé” is Garrett Thomas, suspected of being the notorious Whistle-Stop bandit.  If I don’t find the proof needed to put him away, I could end up as his wife.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

Right now I’m afraid of finding that proof.  Not only is he the kindest and most attractive man I ever met, he has two adorable children.  I’m the daughter of an outlaw and I know what an awful burden that is to bear.  I hope for their sakes (okay, mine too) that I never find the stolen money that would prove his guilt.

5.  What do you want out of life?

More than anything I want a home and family, but knowing what I know of men and how untrustworthy they are I don’t see myself getting married.  I guess you could say I’m doomed to remain a spinster.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

Honesty, which is kind of funny because my job working undercover requires me to lie and pretend I’m someone I’m not.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I read dime novel detective stories whenever I have a chance.  They always make me laugh because they make a detective’s life sound so glamorous.  It’s not.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My background. How I wish I had been born to good, honest parents.  My mother deserted me and my father was an outlaw. I’m afraid to contact my brothers for fear they might have turned out like him.  You’d think I’d know better than to fall in love with a suspected thief and killer…

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

No pets.  I travel from place to place on assignment and spend most of my time in flea-ridden hotels.  Pets need a home and that’s something I don’t have.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d travel back to when I was ten and last saw my father.  Maybe this time he would tell me he loved me and say he was sorry for everything he did. The reason I became a Pinkerton detective is to make up to society for all the harm he caused.

Thank you for letting me visit today.  Okay now I have a question for your readers.  If you lived during my time, would you have considered being a Pinkerton detective and working undercover? Why or why not?
