Fatal Trauma

Interview with the hero from Fatal Trauma by Richard Mabry:

1. Dr. Mark Baker, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I don’t consider myself interesting. I had a year of a general surgery residency, but I found that too limiting, so I switched to family practice. Then, thinking I’d like a little variety and excitement in my life, I took a position as an emergency room doctor. That’s when I found excitement—being told I had to save the life of a man who appeared to be moribund, while a wild-eyed stranger held a gun to the head of the nurse I’d been dating. Yeah, that was exciting.

2.  What do you do for fun?

There’s not a lot of time in my life for fun things. Occasionally, I sit down in front of the TV and lose myself in mindless sitcoms…but no medical shows. I get plenty of that kind of drama every day.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

That’s a tough one to answer…not because I don’t know, but because I don’t like to think about it. I thought I was a pretty good guy until the chips were down, at which point I realized I spent too much time thinking about how I could save my own skin, and not enough considering all the other lives that depended on my actions.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

I guess, truth be told, I’m most afraid of letting down the people who depend on me.

5.  What do you want out of life?

I guess I want what most men my age want—to fall in love, marry a woman who loves me, and live happily ever after. But right now it doesn’t seem to be that simple.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

Well, since the police seem to think I’m a murderer, I guess the most important thing right now is keeping my freedom long enough to clear my name. Other than that? I want Kelly Atkinson to know I’m in love with her…no matter what things may look like.

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

I probably haven’t picked up a non-medical book since starting med school. No, that’s not true. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot in the Bible my folks gave me when I left home. And I’ve been surprised how relevant and up to date some of the passages are.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’m not sure. Maybe I’d ask to be more confident in my faith, the way Kelly is. I might even ask not to have ever fallen away. Then again, if that were true, I might never have developed such a close relationship with Kelly.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

When I was a kid, my brother and I shared custody of a dog, although, looking back, my parents ultimately took care of her. After I left home for college, med school, and specialty training, there was never the opportunity for a pet. I guess if I marry Kelly, we’ll get a cocker spaniel for the kids to play with. And I’ll warn them, “You have to take care of her.”

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

That’s an easy one. I’d travel back to the time when I was in med school and my younger brother, Joe, was in college. I’d sit him down and make him listen as I stressed the hazards of driving late at night. He already knew not to drink and drive, my parents had hammered that home. But what he either didn’t realize or chose to ignore was that you have to be extra careful if you’re out on the road late at night. That’s when a drunk driver is most likely to hit your car head-on and kill you…the way one did Joe.
