Interview with the hero from Falcon by Ronie Kendig:

1. Salvatore, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

About the most interesting thing about me is that I’m not interesting. I’m just a soldier doing what soldiers do, and my commitment is to the team and the mission.

2.  What do you do for fun?

When we have some downtime, I like a game of baseball like the next guy. But there’s not enough of that, though I think it tends to help us keep our head in the game—the combat game, that is.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

When we are home, I dread the quiet time where everyone wants to sit around and shoot the breeze. The conversation invariably comes around to me and how I’m doing. It’s like they’re waiting for me to fall apart or something.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

Failing. Failing my team. Failing myself. Again.

5.  What do you want out of life?

To know that I did all I could with all that I was given.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

Being a man of honor, someone my guys know they can trust.

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

If I get time to read—and that doesn’t happen much—you’ll usually find me reading the memoir of a soldier, Marine, or other brother in the Armed Forces.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

The past. But that’s a lost cause before I ever said it, so I don’t go there. I just keep my eyes on the target, on moving forward and being the best I can be.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Nah, being deployed kinda kills that. But if I had one, I’d probably adopt a retired working dog. One who’s already been there, done that like I have.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Like I said a couple of questions ago, that’s a lost cause, so I’d rather not dwell on it. It’s painful enough knowing what happened in the past. Thinking about going back and fixing it doesn’t help anyone. Especially not her.
