Interview with the hero from Buried by Elizabeth Goodard:

1. Cade Warren, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m an avalanche specialist. I have a degree in glaciology and, most of my days, at least in the winter, I’m wrapped up in trying to keep people safe from avalanches. More than that, I’m a search and rescue volunteer. That need to help people runs in my family. It’s in my blood.

2. What do you do for fun?

I love to ski and hike. I love to explore the stunning landscape of southeast Alaska.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I’ve put off digging deeper into what happened when my father was killed in an avalanche. Maybe I’m afraid of what I might find. I blame myself for what happened and I don’t understand why God would let a man who spent all his time helping others die in the icy clutches of the kind of incident he tried to prevent. An avalanche.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Losing someone else that I love.

5. What do you want out of life?

My father was a real hero, and all I want is to live up to his reputation. To one day be the man that he was.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

I have a mantra I live by. “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Proverbs 3:27.” I believe if I live by that code, then I’ve done all I can do in this life to be a good man. To do what God asks me to do.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

The classics. Moby Dick for one.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I’m too trusting. After I’ve rescued someone from their mountain dilemma, I avoid getting close, or getting to know them. I walk away every time, and that’s because I’ve been crushed. Not going to let that happen again.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I had a husky once. Blue eyes and smart. Love those dogs. Have several friends who have search and rescue dogs, but my schedule doesn’t give me any time to devote to a pet. So I’ll just enjoy someone else’s when I can.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Didn’t have to think twice about this one. I’d go back to the day my father got a search and rescue callout to assist a man he hated, a man he had some mysterious on-going feud with—and my father was the one who died. I’d go back to that day, and do what he’d done for countless others. I’d save him, keep him from being buried.
