Interview with the hero from The Rancher’s City Girl by Patricia Johns:
1. Cory Stone, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
That depends on what you want to know about. I’m a rancher, so I love my land, but you’d probably be more interested to know about my dad. I just found him for the first time in my life–or rather, his nurse found me and introduced us. My mother never told me very much about him, but there’s a story there–a story that ends in my birth.
2. What do you do for fun?
I ride, mostly. Getting out into the open fields is freeing. I’m a big guy, and people tend to be intimidated by me, but the land is bigger than I am, and I can just… be.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Finding my father was a big one on that list. In some ways I wish I’d left well enough alone and never responded to that cryptic phone call. When it came to my father, I think I was happier with my adolescent fantasies about a father with some unknown but excellent excuse to be invisible in my life.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Of not ever opening myself up. Protecting myself comes easily, but not vulnerability.
5. What do you want out of life?
I want a woman who loves this land as much as I do. Too much to ask? Maybe.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Well, since there’s no going back on meeting my old man, I guess getting a few answers.
7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
I’m not a big reader, but my mom was. I have a library in the ranch house that you might enjoy. The windows open up over the horse pasture, and when the sun sets, the last rays flood inside.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I wouldn’t choose to be smaller, or weaker, but I would choose to intimidate people a little less. I’m a good guy. I wish people could look me in the eye first, so they could see that.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
A pet? I’ve got cattle. I’ve got horses. No, no pets, exactly, but I do have a bond with my horse, Lexie. She’s been the most constant female in my life for a while now. Don’t roll your eyes, now.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I think I’d probably just stay put. I’m more blessed than I deserve right now. I inherited my grandfather’s ranch, and I love this land something fierce. So I wouldn’t go anywhere. I’d just thank God for what I’ve got.
