HawkInterview with the heroine from Hawk by Ronie Kendig:

1. Fekiria, tell me the most interesting thing about you. Probably the most interesting thing is that I am one of the first women in the Afghanistan Army to return to the skies. The female pilot training program opened in the last few years, and I have been following in the steps of Niloofar Rhmani.

2. What do you do for fun? It is probably wrong of me to say, but I have no time for fun. My country has been in one war after another and I am fighting for my own rights, so I am happy when I can just sit and enjoy some baklava with my cousin, Zahrah.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it? Seeing my parents and older siblings. They are steeped in old traditions and beliefs, and it strains our relationship. They would not understand that I want to be a pilot, so I have not told them.

4. What are you afraid of most in life? That my baba will find out I am still in the Afghan army and a pilot.

5. What do you want out of life? To be free to choose for myself what to believe and do, not live beneath oppressive rules, whether enacted by man or governments.

6. What is the most important thing to you? This may sound surprising since I am hiding so much from my family, but I value honesty and integrity.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read? For now, my reading comprises training manuals, so that I may pass advanced pilot training someday.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? All this secrecy that I am living in.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? I am home so rarely and having pets is not as often done here in Afghanistan as it is in the West. And dogs are viewed as unclean in my culture, so it would be an offense to my family if I had one, but I have seen and encountered an amazing dog named Ddrake.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? In all honesty, looking back does not help one, so I would look forward, to the future. I would love to see if things will work out, if my efforts will be of benefit.
