Romancing the WidowInterview with the heroine from Romancing the Widow by Davalynn Spencer:

1. Martha, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I like bones. Bones that have been skinless for thousands of years. There are a lot of them here, north of Cañon City, up in the Garden Park area, and paleontologists from eastern universities are fighting over who gets to display them. A pity, really, that the fossils can’t stay right here. Like me. Dried up and no good for the living. But I digress …

2. What do you do for fun?

I used to collect fossils, but that was before I became one myself. Oh, I know Mother would scold me for saying such a thing and tell me that life goes on after one’s husband dies. I try, and with all my family around me, I’m making progress, remembering what it was like to enjoy living. The most fun I’ve had in a long time was riding out to Mr. Blanchard’s apple orchard with Haskell Jacobs and filling our baskets with apples. You know, he really is quite dashing—and playful, I discovered. Quite surprising in a Colorado Ranger, really. I like that in a man—a willingness to play and take a moment of lightheartedness.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Plucking dead chickens. I despise it.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Being alone. My prospects of a family are near to none.

5. What do you want out of life?

I wanted a home and children and a loving husband.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Laughter-filled love that lasts a lifetime. The kind my parents have.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

You would scoff at me if I told you all the paleontological papers and books I devoured during my school days. But lately, I’ve read very little.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

At the moment, it would be my shoulder. I would restore it to its previously healthy condition before Mr. Jacobs ran me down with his horse.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

The closest thing I have to a pet is Mother’s old mare, Dolly. The old dear has lived longer than any of us expected, probably because of the love we lavish on her.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would go back to St. Louis the evening a drunkard’s errant bullet dropped my husband dead in the street. I would go back and draw him from the bullet’s path—or take it myself.
