In Perfect TimeHeroine Interview from In Perfect Time by Sarah Sundin:

1. Kay Jobson, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m a flight nurse serving in Italy in World War II. I belong to one of the first squadrons of flight nurses ever established. As a registered nurse and a former stewardess, flight nursing satisfies me—raising spirits, aiding the sick and wounded, and seeing exciting new places.

2. What do you do for fun?

I love to go out dancing with my friends, and I love going out with my boyfriends. Yes, plural. I like to say I have a boyfriend in every airport. Why not? It’s fun, and that way no one gets too close.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Mending. I’m not good with a needle and thread.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Losing control. I work hard to keep my life in tight control.

5. What do you want out of life?

Don’t tell anyone, but I want my own house, with walls and a floor and separate rooms and a porch with a wicker chair. I’ve never had that.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

My goal is to become a chief nurse. When the war is over, flight nurses won’t be needed. But after the independence I’ve enjoyed, I don’t think I’d like to return to ward nursing. If I were a chief nurse, I could be in charge.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

We don’t have a lot of entertainment here on the airfields, so I read the novels that everyone passes around. One thing I won’t read is the Bible. My friends Mellie and Georgie are Bible-readers, but they aren’t pushy about their faith, thank goodness. Just as well, because I know for certain that God doesn’t want anything to do with me.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wish I could sing. If I could, perhaps my parents would have loved me.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

No. I never have. Perhaps when I have a house someday.

10 If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I wouldn’t. The war is awful, but it’s created so many opportunities for women. As a single girl, I can support myself and have adventures. When else in history has that been possible?
