Interview with the heroine from Angela Breidenbach’s story in Snowflake Tiara:
1. Calista Blythe, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I love children. My heart just squeezes tears when I see all the street children hungry and cold in the Montana winters.
2. What do you do for fun?
I love to bake and give away treats to the little boys who sell newspapers on the streets. They’ve captured my heart.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Oh I just fret about singing or playing music in front of people. Why when that nasty Dora ridiculed me in public, I just knew I was meant to stay off the stage.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
What if they find Lea? What if I can’t protect her?
5. What do you want out of life?
Why can’t others see the hurting children? I so want to start a home for all those lost, lonesome, unloved children so they’ll know love.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Compassion is something that’s too often missing in our world. I see people walk by shivering children. I just can’t stand it!
7. Do you read?
Yes, I love to read stories of missionaries.
If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
But my favorite books to read are children’s books. I love the light in those little faces when I read stories to them and show the pictures. The delight, the giggles… it makes me smile the rest of the day. And to think, all it would take for these little ones to grow up and change the world would be a few people caring enough to feed, hug, and read to them. Can you imagine the difference that would make to these little ignored urchins?
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I wish I had more confidence. I wish I could stand up to people like Dora.
9. Do you have a pet?
I didn’t expect to have a pet. But Lea found this little barn kitten. If so, what is it and why that pet? The kitten seems to help Lea stay calm. He also keeps her out of the way of nosy people that can’t find her before I can find a home for Lea. A home where she’ll be loved and wanted, not beaten into submission. I don’t think indentured life is a good idea nowadays, but it’s not right for a small child to be enslaved!
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I never thought about going back in time. I think about the future and how I want it to be different than it is now in 1889. Children need protection from the streets. If something I could do now could change how children are treated in the future then I would feel like my life was well lived.
