ChicoryLanefinalcoverInterview with the hero: Chase Spencer from Home to Chicory Lane by Deborah Raney:

1. Chase, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I guess the fact that I’m an artist. I have no idea where I got my talent. I’m an only child, and I never really knew my dad, and my mom’s too busy running around with her latest boyfriend to do anything productive. But I’m pretty good at painting, and that’s not just my opinion. I’ve sold some of my paintings for pretty decent money.

2. What do you do for fun?

Art. It’s what I do for a living, but it’s my passion, too, so I never really feel like it’s “work” when I’m working on a painting.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Having “discussions” with my wife. I hate to fight and it seems like whenever Landyn wants to discuss something, it turns into a fight. So I just try to avoid the discussions altogether.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

That I’ll fail at marriage and being a dad the way my own dad did…and my mom, too, for that matter. I’m not sure I have it in me to be the kind of husband and father my family needs me to be, but I’m going to die trying.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want to make God proud of me. And I want Landyn and our baby-to-be to be proud of me too.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

My wife—even though she doesn’t exactly believe me when I say that these days. But it’s true. I’d do anything for her. Die for her. But sometimes a man has to do what God wants him to do…even ahead of a wife he loves like life itself.

7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Um…do art books count? It’s not exactly reading…but I do learn a lot just looking at other artist’s work. I’ve never been much of a reader though. Wasn’t that great in school, to tell you the truth. I’m not stupid or anything, but I just always had better things to do, namely my art.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I guess I’d change my past. I know that’s not exactly under my control, and it’s too late to go back and have a do-over. But I’d give anything to have grown up in a family like my wife’s where everybody loved—I mean truly loved—everybody else. Where everybody had the other guy’s back. And Grant and Audrey—that’s Landyn’s mom and dad—they lived an example for all their kids, so they knew what it meant to be a dad, and a mom.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

We’ve kind of been living between New York and Missouri since we got married, so a pet wouldn’t be the best decision right now. But once we get settled wherever we’re going to end up, I wouldn’t mind having a dog. Landyn’s family has a chocolate Lab and I’d love to have a dog just like that. Especially after we have kids. My mom would never let me have a pet, so I definitely want my kids to have a dog. Maybe a cat, too.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Oh, man. That’s a hard one. Probably back to the week God created the heavens and the earth. That’s something I’d love to capture on canvas.
