Interview with the heroine from Shaken by Kariss Lynch:
Kaylan, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I don’t know if it’s the most interesting thing, but I could live on coffee and sweet tea. No water necessary. But it’s all about the mug with coffee. The cuter the mug, the greater the experience.
What do you do for fun?
Dance. Dance is definitely how I burn stress and how I have fun. Some of my favorite memories are dancing as a Sugar Plum Fairy at Christmas when I was little, but I also really love hip hop.
What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I hate organizing unless I absolutely have to. I’m not exactly messy. I know where everything is, so there is no need to be OCD about it. But if you were to walk in my room and start going through my drawers, you might have difficulty finding things.
What are you afraid of most in life?
Losing those I love. I think it’s why experiencing the Haiti earthquake shattered me. People I loved and worked with didn’t make it. It broke my heart to lose them. It terrifies me that I might lose Nick or Micah in combat, and almost losing my granddad, Pap, to a heart attack challenged my resolve. Nothing in life is guaranteed. We aren’t promised tomorrow. The Lord is teaching me a lot about giving those I love to Him, but it still terrifies me.
What do you want out of life?
I want to make a difference, help people live full, healthy lives. It’s why I picked a field in nutrition. I was accepted to a dietetics internship in California, but we’ll see what happens next. I think more than anything I want a family. Maybe it’s with Nick. Maybe not. Time will tell. Growing up with three brothers definitely made our home interesting, and I want that – a loving husband and a house full of kids.
What is the most important thing to you?
My family is my world. Pap is one of my favorite people in the world. My brothers are my best friends, my parents my mentors and confidants. They stick no matter what, and I would do anything for them. People and making memories are more important than things any day. But if I HAD to pick a favorite trinket, it would definitely be the lily necklace Nick gave me after Haiti.
Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I’m not a big reader right now. I mostly read textbooks for homework and research. I really enjoy reading people’s blogs. You can learn a lot about people and places by reading their experiences.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My pale skin. I blame my British roots. Sunburns are terrible. Freckles pop out everywhere. And every time I blush, it is really noticeable. Nick gives me a hard time about it. It’s embarrassing. But regardless, I love being outside on the lake. I’ll just use lots of sunscreen and consider the freckles added character.
Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I have a horse named Black-eyed Pea. She’s tan with a black mane and tale, just like those black-eyed peas we like to eat for luck on New Year’s down here in the South. She’s a beauty. My Pap got her for me when I was younger. When I ride, I escape. It’s my happy place.
If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
Hmm, that’s a tough one. I think I would visit Victorian England. To see the culture and dresses would be so interesting. I would love to attend a masquerade ball or see the influence of the royal family at that time in history.
