Grace Davenport, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Not sure how to answer that question. Unless you think having three husbands die under mysterious circumstances is interesting.

What do you do for fun?

Since I’m sitting in a jail cell at the moment accused of murdering my latest husband, there isn’t much to do in the way of fun ‘cept stare at the walls.

What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I always dread going into town. The folks there look at me all funny-like. Those awful things they say about me just ain’t true. Honest!

What are you afraid of most in life?

If they don’t hang me or send me to prison I’m also afraid of falling for my handsome lawyer. Well, it ain’t gonna happen. Not if I have anything to say about it. Husbands have brought me nothing but trouble. What do I need another one for?

What is the most important thing to you?

My dear sweet son Jesse. He’s ten years old and smart as a whip. He’s the best thing that ever happened to me.

What do you want out of life?

I wanted a good man to love me and be a proper father for my son. But the good Lord seems to have other plans. Right now I just want go home and take care of my son.

Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I don’t read very well, but my son does. He can actually read big words—five dollar words as my lawyer calls them.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would stop making foolish decisions. A man promises to take care of me and my son, and I believe him. No more. I’m done with men for good and that goes double for my handsome lawyer.

Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Don’t know what you mean by a pet. Animals have to earn their keep around here just like everyone else. They take care of us and we take care of them.

Ifyou could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

Oh, my! What a crazy idea, traveling back in time. If such a thing was possible I’d take the train rather than a stage back to 1860 before my brother was killed in the war. He died before I was born, but Mama said that his death is what turned Papa into a hard bitter man. You know what I’d tell my brother? Not to go to Gettysburg.
