5183caFgdrLInterview with the heroine from Words of Conviction by Linda J. White:

1. Kenzie, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Me? I’m not sure there is … well, OK: I’m an FBI agent who studies the words criminals use. I’m a forensic psycholinguist! I detect deception, analyze threats, and discern verbal difference like local dialect. I guess that makes me a nerd! But hey, I’m a nerd who carries a gun.

2. What do you do for fun?

Honestly, I don’t have a lot of time for fun, especially when we’re on a hot case. I run with my dog, Jack. That’s fun. And I’ve recently met this guy who talks about kayaking and horseback riding in the mountains. I’m in! When I have time…

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

Spring cleaning. Good grief, who has time for that? I rarely get to the bottom of it. Washing windows? Ha! And sometimes it’s May before I’ve put my sweaters away!

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

Hmmm … I have to say becoming like my mother. She drives me crazy. She’s so critical! But that same critical, perfectionistic spirit is what makes me key in to small signs of deception and little nuances of language when we’re interviewing suspects. I’m analytical. I see things others don’t. And it helps us solve cases.

5. What do you want out of life?

The usual: marriage, a family. To wake up in the morning with my husband next to me. To rock away the night with a baby in my arms. I mean, I love my job, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I didn’t want a rich personal life, too! There’s just been something holding me back…

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Integrity. I’m an expert in deception. The last person I want to detect deception in is myself. Yet I know that the Bible says the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked! So I try to do a heart check frequently and make sure I am who I think I am.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Of course I read mystery/suspense! I love those keep-me-up-all-night thrillers and the more authentic they are, the better. I learn from the forensics and love the tension. That is, as long as the good guys always win!

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I have a hard time receiving love. Being open with people. I’ve had boyfriends but all the relationships seem to stop at the same place: They get serious and I shy away. Something happened recently that may have changed that. I hope so.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Yes! Jack is my Springer spaniel. I got him when I was doing graduate work. I had just broken up with my undergrad boyfriend and I needed love. So I got Jack. It was hard keeping him while I was going through the FBI Academy: I actually had to ask an old college roommate to take him for the four months I was gone. And my schedule even today can be crazy. But he’s terrific!

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

To just before the Tower of Babel: I’d like to study the original human language, before God mixed things up. Ah, a linguist’s dream! (Yes, I am definitely a nerd.)
