The Shepherd's Bride 1Interview with the heroine of The Shepherd’s Bride by Patricia Davids:

1.  Lizzie Barkman, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m a runaway. An Amish runaway. I left my uncle’s abusive home in the dead of night to seek shelter with my estranged grandfather. Uncle is making my sister marry a horrible man. I have only a few weeks to find a home and earn enough money to get all three of my sisters to safety. It’s a tall order.

2.  What do you do for fun?

Right now, I’m bottle feeding baby lambs. You have no idea how cute they are and how much care they take. I like to quilt, but my sisters have more talent than I.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

The only thing I own of value is the wedding ring quilt my mother made for me. I may have to sell it in order to save my sisters. I dread doing that, but I will.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

That I have escaped and in doing so I have condemned my sisters to a worse fate.

5.  What do you want out of life?

For my family to be together.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

God, my sisters, and helping Carl King find his way back to God and his Amish faith. He is my grandfather’s shepherd. He’s a fine man but so troubled.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I read when I can. For now, I’m learning about sheep!

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would have more faith. Sometimes, I doubt God’s goodness.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

We have a dog. His name is Duncan. He belongs to Carl. He’s an English shepherd, black with a white ring around his neck and tan spot over his eyes. He’s very protective of the sheep and a joy to watch when he herd’s them.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would go back to the day my mother died. I know we cannot change God’s plan for us, but I would dearly love to kiss her goodbye.
