TSInterview with the hero: NICK WALSH FROM TREACHEROUS SLOPES BY TERRI REED

1. Nick, tell me the most interesting thing about you.  I’m a competitive ski jumper.  I grew up in central Oregon at the base of Mt. Bachelor, home the of the best world class skiing.

2.  What do you do for fun?  Ski.  Being on the mountain is my favorite way to spend my time, whether in competition or just goofing off with friends.  My brother and I learned to ski around the same time we learned to walk.  My mother jokes that I was born with skies on.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?  Giving interviews.  I can’t imagine anyone thinking I’m very interesting.  I’m just a regular guy, looking to make my mark on the world.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?  Losing the people I love.  I lost my brother a few years ago.  It was devastating.  Recently, someone tried to kill me and the woman I love.  If anything happened to her, I don’t think I could go on.

5.  What do you want out of life? I want to win gold in the upcoming big winter games to honor my brother.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?  Family.  I recently reconnected with an old friend and she made me realize what my life was lacking.  I had some obstacles to overcome before I could let myself believe I could have what I wanted.

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book? I’m a huge Lord of the Rings fan.  I’ve read them several times.  I think I identify best with Sam.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?  My compulsive competitiveness.  Yet, that same competitiveness has led me to compete for a spot on the US Ski team.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?  I don’t but if I did it would be a dog.  Dogs love unconditionally.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?  I would go back to the day my brother died and not let him take the final run down the mountain that claimed his life.  That will haunt me forever but I know he is with God and that gives me comfort.
