MarriageInMiddlebury_FInal.inddInterview with the heroine from A Marriage in Middlebury by Anita Higman:

1. Charlotte Rose Hill, tell me the most interesting thing about you?

I love life, even the hard parts. I think the difficult times have made me stronger rather than bitter. I hope so anyway. Maybe it would be better for you to ask my customers this question. The gentle folk who frequent my tearoom know me very well.

2. What do you do for fun?

I love to cook, so I tinker in my kitchen, trying to come up with new recipes for my tearoom—which is The Rose Hill Cottage Tearoom in Middlebury Texas.

3. What do you put off dong because you dread it?

I don’t like confronting people. I’d rather share a laugh with someone than correct him or her.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?

That I’ll never get another chance to fall in love again. That the best of love has passed me by forever.

5. What do you want out of life?

To create a sanctuary in Middlebury—a gathering place—where the locals can enjoy great food, some signature teas, and friendly camaraderie.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

The Golden Rule

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I love all things Jane Austen, and I like biographies of current people who started out with rough circumstances but were able to rise above their pain and overcome their obstacles.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Sometimes I feel I lack courage when I need it the most. I wish I could have the heart of a warrior, instead of a whiner.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I don’t have a pet right now, because I’m too busy with my tearoom, but when I was little, I had a pet beagle named Scruffy. Such a friendly pet! I really loved that dog, especially the way she would race out to greet me each weekday when I got off the school bus.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d love to go back to Victorian times, when women always dressed up, etiquette was a necessity, and tea was a way of life.
