Interview with the hero A Place of Refuge by Janet Lee Barton:
1. Luke, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
A lot of people don’t know that I write dime novels for a living. I am writing a more serious book now though—one to help the immigrants who live in the tenements. I met up with a family in Central Park last summer. One woman was being threatened by her brother-in-law, and I took up for her. She has the most glorious red hair. I never saw them again, until she . . . Kathleen . . . was brought to Heaton House, beaten and bruised. It’s made me want to do something—anything—I can to help people living in those situations.
2. What do you do for fun?
I like going on outings with the other boarders. It’s even more fun since Kathleen came. She’s never had a chance to do anything much for enjoyment. I like taking her nephews to fly kites, too. They are very special little boys.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
There’s not much I put off. I know that it will only nag at me if I do.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
That I might lose Kathleen, now that I’ve found her.
5. What do you want out of life?
I want to help Kathleen and her sister have a better life. I want to help others get out of the tenements. And deep down I want a life with Kathleen.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Kathleen and her family.
7. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?
I don’t have much time to read as much since I began writing. But of course the Bible is my favorite. After that it’d the dime novels—I suppose that’s why I like to write them.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’d like to have more patience. But where Kathleen is concerned, she’s been through so much and I’m not sure she’ll ever trust any man with her heart. That’s going to take time and I need as much patience as I can get to convince her to trust me.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I don’t have a pet. I do like dogs though. Maybe one day when I have a family.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I’d go back to that day in the park and I’d insist that Kathleen come back to Heaton House with us. Mrs. Heaton always has room for young women who need help. If I’d done that, her brother-in-law would never have had the chance to beat her up.
