Interview with the heroine: Laura Bell

1.  Laura, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

Interesting? Ha! I had to be hit with the proverbial two-by-four to realize my fiancé was a total … Well, let’s just say he’s my former fiancé. Pretty dumb of me not to figure him out sooner, right? I let him conform me to his way of thinking about everything just because I wanted our relationship to work out. No more. I intend to be myself from now on. Way more interesting.

2.  What do you do for fun?

There hasn’t been a lot of fun in my life lately, at least not until I came back to ranch country. Now fun is wrapped up with walks through the pasture, jogging up the lane, and getting to know a certain neighbor boy who’s grown up to be much more than even my quivering middle-grade heart remembered him to be. Oh, and horseback riding.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I’m not a fan of cleaning house, and I still haven’t put much effort into furnishing the old family home. I’m content to sit on the front porch swing and watch the hawks soar rather than spend money on furniture.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

I can see you loosened me up with the easy questions first before coming in for the kill. That’s fine – I might as well admit it. I’m terrified that I’ll never love again and be alone the rest of my life. I’m just like the old scarred oak tree at the bottom of the pasture. But the funny thing is, even though its heart was burned out, it lives. Life surges through that rough outer bark into the limbs that branch out with tiny oak leaves. Maybe I can learn something from it …

5.  What do you want out of life?

I want to not cry while answering these questions. I want to start over—if that’s possible. I want to live again, to trust, to love, and not hyperventilate just thinking about it.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

Funny you should ask. It’s changed from me to him—Eli, that is. For some reason, it’s becoming more and more important that Eli understand what God is offering him.

7.  Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

I plan to substitute at the elementary school come fall, so I like to stay up with the latest children’s books as well as the classics. Who can resist Charlotte’s Web?

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would be smarter. Not let people like you-know-who run over me and mold me into something I’m not. I’m working on it though, and it’s deeply connected with how much I’m willing to trust God.9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Oh, I love my black-and-white kittens, Pete and Re-Pete. They make me laugh. And the new puppy, Chica. Right now, they’re all the family I have in the world.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I would go back twelve years to the day I ran down the hill to tell Eli that my family was moving. I’d go back to that moment and tell him that I loved him with all my heart. I had a heart then, and it was filled with him. Now I wonder if it’s too late.
