Interview with the hero from Whispers on the Prairie by Vickie McDonough:

1. Ethan Harper, tell me the most interesting thing about you. I grew up living at a remote Kansas stage stop on the Santa Fe Trail with my parents and two brothers. I also help outfit city folk who catch the vision to travel west in wagon trains. Most of them have no idea what all they need or how to pick a good wagon from a bad one.

2.  What do you do for fun? Mostly I work, but I have fun times with family around the dinner table, and I like trying to outdo my brothers or wrestling with them once in a while, even though we’re all grown now.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it? I don’t like being put in charge of people. I can easily handle any chore that comes my way. I can shoot well, rope cattle, but I don’t want to be put in charge of people. That probably seems a contradiction to my part-time job where I help outfit city folk for traveling along the Trail, I feel like I’m helping protect them by seeing that they purchase the proper supplies, teams, and wagons.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life? Failing my family. Disappointing God.

5.  What do you want out of life? Ever since my sister-in-law died when I was escorting her home from visiting our neighbors, I’ve suffered tremendous guilt. It’s my secret goal to find another wife for my oldest brother, Aaron, and a mother for his two children. Maybe then the guilt will go away.

6.  What is the most important thing to you? Faith and family.

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book? I read the Bible, and before bed, I’ll sometimes read a novel, although my brother Josh is the real reader in the family. Still, I have recently discovered The Count of Monte Cristo and have found it quite engaging.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I’d take things more seriously. I’m a hard worker and pull my weight at the stage stop, but since my sister-in-law’s accident, I’ve tried to be even more responsible, but no matter hard I work, I feel that I never quite measure up.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet? No, not really—unless you count my horse.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why? I’d go back to the day Della, my sister-in-law died, and make sure she didn’t ride off like she did. That day will forever haunt me.
