RulesCoverCropInterview with the hero from Rules of Murder by Julianna Deering:

1.  Drew Farthering, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I enjoy solving puzzles.  Until recently, I had confined that to the contents of the latest mystery novel, but I’m finding I rather enjoy trying my hand at real sleuthing.

2.  What do you do for fun?

Oh, lots of things.  I particularly like to play golf, though I’m not much good at it.  I like to travel and go to the theater and ride.  I like parties if they’re not too rowdy and if there are some decent girls to dance with.  Mostly I like to try to solve mysteries.

3.  What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I don’t very much like having to tell people bad news.  If I must tell a perfectly topping girl that her uncle is a murderer or a deuced nice lady that her husband is an adulterer, it’s very difficult for me.  I would rather be able to tell them such things aren’t true.

4.  What are you afraid of most in life?

I suppose I’m afraid I’ll realize one day that my whole life has meant nothing to anyone at all and has made absolutely no difference in the world.

5.  What do you want out of life?

To have some purpose.  I’m supposed to be one of the idle rich, but idleness doesn’t really suit me.  I want to know I have accomplished something when I get to the end of my life, something that has in some way helped someone.

6.  What is the most important thing to you?

That’s quite a difficult question.  I suppose I most want to be an honorable man and not shame the name of Farthering.  I very much admire and love my late father, and I want to make him proud.

7.  Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Oh, yes, I love to read.  Mostly I read detective stories.  I love Sherlock Holmes.  And I’m pretty keen on books written by Mrs. Christie and that Sayers woman.  I like to try to figure out the mystery before the author reveals it.  Solving real mysteries myself is a little more daunting.

8.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I think I would not be so quick to assume things.  It seems the quicker I “know” something, the quicker I’m proven wrong.

9.  Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

I have a cat called Minerva.  Well, Farthering Place has her.  She’s a sweet little thing who likes to curl up on my freshly pressed clothing, much to the dismay of the staff.  But she just had a litter of kittens.  There’s a little white one in there that I call Mr. Chambers.  I have a feeling he and I are going to be great friends.  I like all sorts of animals, and we have plenty of them on the estate, but I think cats are my favorite.  They’re quite fastidious and always elegant, even if they tend a bit towards snobbishness.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I rather fancy going back to the time of knights and chivalry.  Henry V would be grand to see, especially in his victory at Agincourt.  I would quite likely miss the Rolls though once I’d ridden twenty or thirty miles on horseback.
