Interview with the heroine from Mistaken by Karen Barnett:
1. Laurie, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
Other than working at the Port Angeles telephone exchange and recently getting my hair bobbed, I’m pretty ordinary. My older brother, on the other hand—he’s the troublemaker. Oh…I’ve said too much. You can forget the last bit, right?
2. What do you do for fun?
I love to sketch. When I get anxious about something, I sit down and draw. It seems to help me sort through problems when I can lay them out in front of me like that. I just finished a picture of a mysterious man I met at Crescent Beach. It took awhile, but I finally captured how the moonlight reflected off the water that night.
3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
Housework. After a long day at the switchboard, the last thing I want to do is come home and clean house. Thankfully it’s just Dad and me, and he doesn’t mind if the place isn’t spotless.
4. What are you afraid of most in life?
Anyone learning the truth about my family.
5. What do you want out of life?
My single greatest desire is to find one person who is trustworthy. My mom died when I was little, and my dad and brother have let me down a few too many times. I’d like to have someone in my life I can lean on when things get crazy.
6. What is the most important thing to you?
Loyalty. Honesty. Family.
7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I don’t read very often, since I prefer to spend my free time drawing. Occasionally, I stop in at the library and look for a romantic story with a happy ending. I already have suspense and tragedy in my life—when I read, I’m looking for escape.
8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would put less stock in what other people think, and learn to see myself—and others—through God’s eyes.
9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
My brother had a scruffy mutt when we were kids. I don’t know what happened to it after Johnny and I were sent to live with an aunt on Orcas Island for a time. I’ve always wanted a dog of my own. My friend Anne-Marie has a miniature poodle she carries about in a purse, but I’d rather have a big, huggable pooch.
10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?
I remember reading a book of legends about King Arthur and his knights. Though I’d miss the modern conveniences like the telephone and my dad’s model T, I think it would be marvelous to meet a group of men dedicated to ideals such as faith, valor, charity, and temperance.
