Interview with the hero from A Lady of Quality by Louise Gouge:

Good afternoon, ladies. Permit me to introduce myself. I am Baron Lord Winston, and I am honored to be your guest today. Your lovely hostess has asked me a few questions, and I am delighted to answer them.

What is the most interesting thing about me?

I suppose most would consider my family heritage extremely interesting. My title extends back to the days of Henry III, and no scandal has ever touched us.

What do I do for fun?

Why, fencing, of course. I engage in friendly duels with my fellow peers at Monsieur Angelus’s Academy in London. Sometimes the Prince Regent’s brother, the Duke of York, attends, which gives me the opportunity to show my skills to this influential prince. Perhaps he will put in a good word for me as I seek to enter the diplomatic corps. One day, however, a young French lad wearing a face mask was my opponent, and he very nearly bested me. Before I could discover his identity, he fled the academy. Once I found out who “he” was, I was astounded and appalled.

What do I put off doing because you dread it?

I am a little embarrassed by my own hesitation in this matter. You see, my father was offered the title of earl for exemplary service to the crown, but he died before he could accept it. I have put off applying for that elevation because I want to earn the right for myself. I dread the idea of not being worthy of such a position.

What do I want out of life?

My dearest desire is to serve my king and country as a diplomat. Although I am only twenty-four years old, I believe this is where the Almighty would have me. Of course, a diplomat must have a wife, so I am currently attending balls and soirees seeking a wellborn lady to court.

What is the most important thing to me?

Truth, integrity, faithfulness, not only in my own life but in the life of any young lady whose hand I might seek in marriage.

Do I read books? If so, what is my favorite type of book?

Ah, yes, I am quite a reader. Although I prefer serious political material, I have recently been introduced to a delightful fiction author, Jane Austen. Her Sense and Sensibility is an interesting character study, which I have taken great delight in discussing with a certain Miss Catherine Hart. This lovely young lady has surprising insights. I must ask permission to visit her again so we can find out whether we have other similar interests.

Do I have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

Indeed, I have a pet cat, Crumpet. Although many would consider this an unusual pet for a titled gentleman, I find dear Crumpet comforts and amuses me as the most unexpected times.

If I could travel back in time, where would I go and why?

Of course such an idea is preposterous, but I will indulge you in this matter. I would go back in time to visit with the first Lord Winston in the thirteenth century. I would like to discover what extraordinary qualities he possessed that inspired King Henry III to give him the title of baron. Then I would travel through time and learn all I could from each subsequent holder of the title Lord Winston. I can only hope to emulate, with the help of God, these excellent examples of Christian leadership.
