1, Katie Bender, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

I’m Amish and live in Hope Falls, a small settlement in Michigan. Because I’m unmarried and twenty-nine, some consider me a maidal (old maid).

2. What do you do for fun?

Before the tornado, the women in my settlement met regularly for sewing frolics, which I loved. We still gather, mostly to prepare meals for the workers who are rebuilding our community. Even after the disaster, it’s still fun to get-together.

3. What are you afraid of most in life?

I’m concerned the school won’t be rebuilt. It seems I’m the only one who sees that rebuilding the schoolhouse is crucial.

4. What do you put off doing because you dread it?

I put off thinking what will happen if I have to stop teaching. It’s terrifying to think I might be stuck working at the vegetable stand.

5. What do you want out of life?

I want to make a difference in a child’s life. I probably will never get married and have a family of my own, so I feel rewarded when I see my students do well.

6. What is the most important thing to you?

Living a godly life and following the Lord’s direction, which I’m sure is teaching.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?

Oh, I read a lot. Lately, I’ve been reading about dyslexia since one of my students struggles in this area.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I suppose sometimes I try too hard and that tends to lead to trouble. I should work harder to change that flaw.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

In our settlement, we travel exclusively by horse and buggy. My mare’s name is Peaches.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

If I believed traveling back in time was real, I would go back seven years and warn my fiancé not to go in the river. Perhaps if he knew the danger, he wouldn’t have died trying to save a sheep.
